Since 2000, Dr. J. Timothy Katzen has operated on over one thousand massive weight loss patients or people who have lost over 100 pounds. In total, Dr. Katzen has performed over one thousand surgeries on massive weight loss patients. These surgeries include the 360 bodylift, tummy tuck, leg or thigh lift, breast lift, arm lift or reduction, neck and facelift.

Dr. J. Timothy Katzen’s goal is for all weight loss patients to complete their own personal weight loss journey and feel good about their transformed bodies. Dr. J. Timothy Katzen is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only plastic surgery board that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties as a legitimate plastic surgery board dealing with the entire body and not just restricted to the head and neck.

Dr. J. Timothy Katzen trained for three years in general surgery then spent seven years training specifically in plastic surgery; usually, only two years of plastic surgery training are required. Dr. Katzen has completed three separate year-long fellowships in plastic surgery; these included fellowships in burn plastic surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, microsurgery research at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston, Texas, and craniofacial plastic surgery at the prestigious New York University Medical Center. All this training led Dr. Katzen to become a Clinical Instructor at the Skull Base Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Katzen went into private practice and has made PS the focus of his practice.


Dr. J. Timothy Katzen has been in the media extensively. Dr. Katzen is a recognized leader in the field of reconstructive plastic surgery after massive weight loss. Dr. Katzen is the host of “The Real Skinny”. This is a brand new exciting show dedicated to true stories surrounding massive weight loss patients. The show will air on TLC on March 12, 2012.

Dr. Katzen has also been the plastic surgery host on the widely acclaimed television show “The Shrinking Woman”. This documentary followed a 637 pound woman through her 450 pound weight loss. The show included her 360 body lift.

Dr. Katzen has also appeared on “The Health Journal” with former Secretary of State and NATO Commander Alexander Haig. On this show, Dr. Katzen discussed reconstructive plastic surgery massive weight loss. In addition, Dr. Katzen has appeared on ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX-NEWS.

Dr. Katzen has also hosted several radio programs including Light Hearted Entertainment.

Dr. J. Timothy Katzen has received many awards. In 2011, Dr. Katzen was deeply honored to be the only recipient of the Founder’s Award bestowed by the Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America. In addition, Dr. Katzen was awarded “Businessman of the Year 2005” by the Business Advisory Council presented in Washington, D.C. by then Vice President Dick Cheney. In the field of plastic surgery, Dr. Katzen has received numerous awards, including the Aston Award which is bestowed to only one plastic surgery resident a year. In addition, Dr. Katzen was presented with the prestigious Glancey Award at the Southeastern Regional Plastic Surgery Meeting in 1999. Dr. Katzen is also very proud of his Eagle Scout award and his achievement of Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow.

Dr. J. Timothy Katzen is very proud to be a member in good standing of a number of acclaimed and important organizations. Dr. Katzen is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS). Dr. Katzen is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). In addition, Dr. Katzen is a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Katzen is also involved with Obesity Help, Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America, and the Obesity Action Coalition.

Dr. Katzen is the son of Jay and Patricia Katzen. Because Dr. Katzen’s father was a U.S. State Department career diplomat, Dr. Katzen has been very fortunate to have lived in many places around the United States and the world such as the Republic of Congo, Zaire, Mali, and Romania. This has created a love for traveling. In addition, one of Dr. Katzen’s passions is digital photography. Dr. Katzen photographs everything! This hobby has proven useful in his plastic surgery practice, taking many “before and after pictures”. He and his wife have been privileged to explore a whole different world underwater through his passion for SCUBA diving and underwater photography.
